What is this hair coloring process called?

I've notice that a lot of people are coloring underneath their hair and the color is slightly noticable because of their layers. Then when they tie their hair up in a ponytail, u can see the strip of color and it looks really cool! Is there a name for this hair coloring trend/process?What is this hair coloring process called?
